ButterStack Is Live: The Game Development Stack You Own

The pipeline visibility that only AAA studios could afford to build for themselves is now something you can sign up for. Observability and AI investigation across the tools you already run: Perforce, Jenkins, Jira, Unreal. The agent reads, you decide.

ButterStack Is Live: The Game Development Stack You Own

Years ago, when I was a Solutions Engineer at Perforce, I sat on a call with one of the largest AAA studios in the world and watched them share a screen that changed my perspective on game builds. A wall of build status: Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC, across dev, staging, QA, and production. Every build, every test result, every deployment, one view. A goldeneye (pun intended 😉) view of the entire operation. A few months later I saw almost the same wall at a competing AAA studio. Each had spent years of internal tools-team time building it, because there was nothing like it to buy.

Everyone else I talked to, the indie teams, the ten-person AA studios, the solo dev pushing builds from their broken laptop (ask me the story!), was duct-taping Jenkins to Jira to Discord to a spreadsheet, and answering “who broke the build?” by asking in chat and hoping to get an answer.

I wrote about that gap in the first thing I ever published about ButterStack. Today the gap gets smaller.

ButterStack is live. You can sign up right now.

What ButterStack is

ButterStack is observability for the game development pipeline, with AI investigation on top. It connects the tools you already run and reads them together: Perforce, Jenkins, Jira, Unreal, Unity, Steam, Discord, plus GitHub, Slack, Linear and more on higher tiers. Commits, builds, tickets, and assets stop being four separate tabs and become one timeline you can actually reason about.

When I say AI is ‘on top’ of the platform, AI isn’t justed bolted on, but a step in the process. I want to emphasize that we built ButterStack with standardized, reputable, and battle tested technologies, the scalable way to build software. We’ve been working on this for over a year (and in the final stages of industry certifications). If your gamedev pipeline has a deterministic pipeline, clear steps, with clear inputs and outputs, that doesn’t mean to use AI/agents. We have the philosophy of LLM at the edges, deterministic middle. (Happy to chat about how we work in this way! Send me a DM).

On top of that deterministic layer sit the agents. This is more than agents, ButterStack is an agentic platform. The first agent you will meet is the Build Investigator. When a build goes red, it walks the Jenkins log, the changelists that landed since the last green build, and the assets they touched, then hands you a root cause and a recommended fix. You read the evidence. You make the call. (coming soon, autofixing!)

That sentence is the whole philosophy of the product: the agent reads, you decide. ButterStack does not write your gameplay code, redesign your levels, or submit to your depot on a hunch. It reads your pipeline and tells you the truth about it. Anything that touches a shipping build stays a recommendation until a human says go, because failures cost weeks and irreplaceable art deserves caution, and the human hand. (or if you want to YOLO, we’ll support that too!)

If you want the full thinking behind that stance, the Agentic Game Dev series (coming soon) lays it out in detail, from the framework to real investigation loops.

See it run

90 seconds: a shader change breaks the Shipping build, and the Build Investigator hands back the root cause, the evidence, and the fix.

We ran it on our own game first

We did not launch this on faith. For the past several months we have been building a real game inside ButterStack: Butter Up!, a small platformer about a walking stick of butter named Pat trying to reach the fridge before he melts. It runs on the exact stack we sell: a real Perforce depot, Jenkins builds, a Jira backlog, Unreal Engine 5. Every changelist in it is real, and the depot never gets reset. Ask us for a demo 🧈!

Before we trusted our Perforce agent anywhere near a customer, we validated it against a live Helix Core server with roughly 8,700 changelists of history. Reality caught bugs that reading the docs never would have: a structured-output flag that silently was not structured, a describe command we had been calling wrong for so long the mistake had fossilized into our own code. Every one of those corrections folded back into the product. The full agentic story is coming soon in “Recursively Creating Our Own Perforce Agent”.

That loop, point the tool at reality and let reality correct it, is how ButterStack got good enough to launch. It is also how it keeps getting better from here.

Pricing, in plain English

Every plan includes the AI. There is no “intelligence sold separately” tier.

Every AI action, a build fix, a failure analysis, an asset analysis, costs a flat 100 credits, and every plan includes a monthly allowance that resets each billing cycle:

  • Indie, $29/mo: 2,500 credits, 1 to 3 team members, the 8 core integrations (Perforce, Jenkins, Jira, Steam, Discord, Unity, Unreal, Tasks).
  • Team, $49/mo: 5,000 credits, up to 20 team members, all integrations, multi-project observability.
  • Studio, $149/mo: 20,000 credits, up to 50 team members, SSO, a success manager.
  • Enterprise: for AAA scale.

Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial, and annual billing saves 20%. The details live on the pricing page.

Who this is for

If you have an internal tools team of thirty people maintaining a build wall, honestly, you already solved this the expensive way. ButterStack is for everyone: the indie, AA and AAA studios where the person answering “why is the build red?” is also the person who was supposed to be shipping the next level. You should not need a AAA budget to know what your own pipeline is doing. If you’re big(ger), then you need to manage multiple projects and control costs and manage delivery estimates.

What happens now

Twenty+ years of building software taught me that the teams who see their pipeline clearly ship calmer, argue less, and go home earlier. Game development deserves that too, and I am not here to tell you how to make your game. I am here to hand you the wall of green and red that only the giants used to have.

Sign up, connect Perforce or Jenkins, and the timeline starts filling in within minutes. If something feels rough, tell me directly: ryan@butterstack.com, goes to a human, and launch week is exactly when I want to hear it.
